Hanham Green Belt Under Threat: Act Now to Protect Our Beloved Spaces!

Six-bar metal field gate leading from one field to another

Our cherished Green Belt is in danger. South Gloucestershire Council's proposed "emerging preferred strategy" for its new local plan includes plans to build 270 houses on Green Belt land in Hanham. This decision would not only destroy precious green spaces, but also have a significant impact on our community and environment.

Hanham District Green Belt Conservation Society (HDGBCS), along with the "Say No to Redrow" campaign group, is taking a stand. We have produced a new information leaflet that will be delivered to 2,500 homes in Hanham, outlining the reasons why this development should not go ahead and how you can help stop it.

Why is the Green Belt so important?

Green lungs for our community: Our Green Belt provides vital green space for recreation, wildlife habitat, and flood prevention. It improves air quality, reduces stress, and contributes to a healthier, happier community.

Preserves our character: Building on the Green Belt would fundamentally alter the character of Hanham, turning our green haven into a concrete jungle.

Once gone, gone forever: Green Belt land is irreplaceable. Once developed, it can never be returned to its natural state.

We believe South Gloucestershire Council should:

Explore all other alternatives before touching the Green Belt: There are many brownfield sites and other areas within the existing urban fabric that could be developed first.

Listen to the community: We urge the Council to reconsider their plans and take the concerns of Hanham residents seriously.

How you can help:

Read our leaflet: It's packed with information about the development and the impact it would have. You can find it on our website by following this link: Save Hanham Green Belt

Attend our objection letter writing workshops: We are holding workshops at Hanham Cricket Club from 10 am to 12 noon on Saturdays, 13th, 20th and 27th January. We will provide guidance and support to help you write a compelling objection to the Council's plans.

Submit your own objection: The public consultation period runs until 7th February 2024. You can submit your objection online or by post. Find the details on how to object by following this link: How to Object

Together, we can make a difference. With enough public support, we can change South Gloucestershire Council's course of direction and protect Hanham's Green Belt land for current and future generations.

Let's show them that our Green Belt is not for sale!
